As [Dan Hind launches](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/e4b79c985e&ref=opendemocracy.net) a debate **on openDemocracy and the digital commons**, we [hear a new note from Gezi Radyo](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/e2920f7d1e&ref=opendemocracy.net) of determination to ‘defend our commons’ as the park is evacuated at gunpoint and [police force is used to achieve ‘national unity’](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/23d78017b0&ref=opendemocracy.net), while Eleftheria Lekakis marks [the stifling of public service broadcasting](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/d4b055f8e3&ref=opendemocracy.net) in Greece.

Police violence under the conditions of rapid neo-liberalization features again in the [call for an enquiry](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/280966772a&ref=opendemocracy.net) into **the Swedish unrest** which began in Husby and rapidly spread. [Astrid Nordin](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/99acb95e1d&ref=opendemocracy.net) explores the layers of problems that prompted these riots.

Two different accounts of how to see **the rise of the populist right**, not just in Europe this week, contrast [Yudit Kiss](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/15b3e6b712&ref=opendemocracy.net)’ evidence for a resurgence of a rooted and lurking European mechanism of hatred, with [Marek Beylin](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/ff7a1c9fec&ref=opendemocracy.net)’s advice not to believe what the populist leaders themselves tell us about e.g.‘Kaczynski’s nation’.

There are surprising echoes of this in N.Jayaram’s analysis of [the rising Modi camp in India](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/ad39aa5070&ref=opendemocracy.net), **whose deeply divisive leader may admire Hitler’s Final Solution**, but still has to deal with the sheer diversity of India; and in [Igor Štiks](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/53c80f4535&ref=opendemocracy.net)’s account of more remarkable protest scenes this week, where this is a logic the citizens of Bosnia-Herzogovina seem to have grasped ahead of their politicians.

This spirit of the times is up against some ancient enemies chronicled by [Emre Caliskan and Simon Waldman](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/57499d3626&ref=opendemocracy.net), writing on sultan Erdogan, or [Igor Torbakov](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/e476bc6708&ref=opendemocracy.net), comparing **the imperialism he finds alive and well in Russia and Turkey** alike. By contrast, [Ed Vulliamy](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/5da7f423b7&ref=opendemocracy.net) rages at a modernity which still has most of us in thrall, in his political tribute to the healing properties of the Greek island of Ikaria; while [Juan Luis Martin](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/054a4c0a78&ref=opendemocracy.net) mourns the Canary Islands, as Spain’s paradise lost.

**As the US decides to arm Syrian rebels**, [Paul Rogers](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/9c07bac4d3&ref=opendemocracy.net) warns that far more people will get killed, [Leymah Gbowee](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/57e548101b&ref=opendemocracy.net) speaks up for the women of Libya, [General Sir Hugh Beach](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/dc1cc83097&ref=opendemocracy.net) urges unilateral renunciation of nuclear weapons, and [Martin Eiermann](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/2104545120&ref=opendemocracy.net) exposes Prism’s unholy alliance.

OurKingdom is still thinking about [Woolwich](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/61561b92f4&ref=opendemocracy.net), [child detention](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/acf7282681&ref=opendemocracy.net), [ourNHS](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/8daaf8ef15&ref=opendemocracy.net), [lobbying](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/48f7f672ba&ref=opendemocracy.net) and [press freedom](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/2c1906ab0e&ref=opendemocracy.net), but the [big story](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/052bdb601a&ref=opendemocracy.net) is **Jo Shaw’s on the ‘secret courts’** enabled by the UK’s new Justice and Security Act.

There is not much in common in Russia’s online community says [Emil Pain](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/8368599305&ref=opendemocracy.net), except **xenophobia**, while [Anthony Barnett](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/25f4d723d6/af262aebde/b4bd82e22f&ref=opendemocracy.net) turns his attention to the Magna Carta.
