The **consequences of the Egyptian crisis go far beyond the country** and its immediate neighbours. Amro Ali [rightly observes](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/aa864d6fd9&ref=opendemocracy.net) that Egypt is already destined to become the textbook example of successful (or failed) democratic transition, while Salam Al-Kawakibi argues the most important [lesson](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/81074290d5&ref=opendemocracy.net) to draw from Egypt and Tunisia ([where the first general strike since 1978](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/a0e2d822d8&ref=opendemocracy.net) took place on Thursday) is that involving all parties from early building stages is key.  
  
50.50, our section on inclusive democracy, has naturally had a long interest in the Egyptian revolution. [Mariz Tadros](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/94270d5f3d&ref=opendemocracy.net) **fears a slide towards "Islamist fascism"** and Zoe Holman discusses [gendered violence as a tool of state repression](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/0915bbb07f&ref=opendemocracy.net) with the founder of anti-harassment network Imprint. Meanwhile, Hania Sholkamy [asks](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/bfd21a68da&ref=opendemocracy.net): will the international community meet the challenge of democracy in Egypt?  
  
It seems that for now, the international community has other fish to fry: the US Army is dealing with [problems](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/a89689310d&ref=opendemocracy.net) of [its own](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/c6af22bfb2&ref=opendemocracy.net), and the **EU is still** [**struggling**](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/33f9b384cb&ref=opendemocracy.net) **to build a coherent foreign action service in the midst of the euro crisis**. Many are also starting to question the [poor democratic record](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/ab7427f054&ref=opendemocracy.net) of the EU, and the worrying [influence of lobbyists](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/1ddec2cbdb&ref=opendemocracy.net) in Brussels – even if there are [(almost) easy solutions](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/401b67497d&ref=opendemocracy.net) to bridging the EU's democratic deficit.  
  
Besides these old problems, **it hasn't been a bad week for the EU** at all: having received a ([well-deserved?](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/9c42913ff6&ref=opendemocracy.net)) Nobel Peace Prize [on Monday](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/1520d20aff&ref=opendemocracy.net), it can look at the future confidently, as its popularity in [new](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/ea3f63a690&ref=opendemocracy.net) and [aspiring](http://cts.vresp.com/c/?openDemocracy/fc507aa431/7262321cfa/0b1baa7fd0&ref=opendemocracy.net) member states hasn't suffered from the crisis.
