# What does it mean to be European?

**Jon Bright (London,** [**OK**](http://ourkingdom.opendemocracy.net/?ref=opendemocracy.net)**):** Just wrote a small piece on [the problem of European identity ](http://www.opendemocracy.net/blog/dliberation/the%5Fcosmopolitan%5Fproblem)over on the [dLiberation blog](http://www.opendemocracy.net/blog/dliberation). Without a common feeling of being European I don't see how the EU can overcome the stiff resistance it faces at the moment - yet most people in the EU itself seem to assume a few abstract values will do the trick. What do you think? Have a look, comment here or there - would be especially interesting to hear from someone who does feel European!
