Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have appointed new ministers tasked with making critical decisions on the Amazon, at a time when the world’s largest rain forest faces huge challenges. Rates of deforestation have increased and threaten the planet’s largest oxygen reserve.

Ricardo Salles was the last of the 22 ministers appointed by Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro picked Salles to lead the Environment Ministry after reneging on his proposal to abolish it, which was widely publicized during his election campaign.
