Election Night

Published:

by Anthony Barnett in NY

The television here at a small gathering in New York has just projected that the House of Representatives will go Democrat. The sound of a Champagne bottle being opened has just echoed from the kitchen. A few minutes ago, the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rahm Emmanuel was interviewed. If this is the voice of peace and fairness it frightened me. He declared that the Democratic Party’s approach to the war was based on its five principles, the five “Rs”. No one here had heard of them and I can’t remember what they were. They seemed add up to “we’ll wait and see”. No one was concerned, relief that even with gerrymandering and flawed voting machines,  democrat voters are angry, they turned out and Bush’s reign of unchallengeable power and authority has come to an end.
