Witness is an independent nonprofit organization, founded by musician and activist Peter Gabriel. In its own words, it ‘uses the power of video to open the eyes of the world to human rights abuses’. In the last year, the internet has witnessed an explosion in user-contributed content. Therefore it comes as no surprise to find that Witness has entered into a partnership with Global Voices Online to create the Human Rights Video Hub, a sort of YouTube for human rights abuses. Contributors around the world are encouraged to upload mobile phone footage, not only as proof of abuses, but also to raise general awareness and thereby gain solidarity and support. The project is still in its pilot stages, but it’s worth tracking.
