Did anyone see a documentary following a chorus group with an average age of 80 touring the jails and concert halls of the States last night on Channel 4? Young at Heart was about the best piece of TV I have seen in a long time, it was so good I held back tears. With death insistently culling off members, they continued to sing. This was absolutely life-affirming, wonderful stuff. They rocked out Sonic Youth, James Brown and the Clash with voices cracked and deepened and full of soul. Think Buena Vista with Johnny Cash. The performance of Prince's Nothing Compares to You by one old lady was spell-binding and the Coldplay swan-song by another member on a respirator magnificent. A DVD is promised. If you care about music or just want to see how much fun old people can have, watch this film.
