FBI strikes again in Puerto Rico

24 February 2006
Officially, it's not a colony. Unofficially, it's hard to know what else to call it. The small island of Puerto Rico has been US territory for more than 100 years. This year, the FBI has come down hard on the remnants of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Five months ago they killed Filiberto Ojeda Rios, who was the leader of the clandestine group Los Machetoros. Earlier this month, they descended on the island again in helicopters with no previous warning to the governor or chief of police, to terrorise other leaders of the independence movement. The Puerto Rican press was attacked with pepper spray. The US press remains largely silent.
