Future City?

Join the debate on the politics of climate change here

For the first time in history the majority of the world’s people live in cities. But urban leaders have been dismally slow in responding to the problem of climate change – this is your opportunity to show them how it’s done.

Cities around the world are coming up with innovative ways to lower emissions. openDemocracy’s Zero Carbon City articles describe some of the groundbreaking work already happening. But what would you have in your zero carbon city?

Would there be wind turbines or nuclear power stations? Would people travel by bike or CNG taxis? What would your house, business or school look like? Maybe there are some projects in your neighbourhood that you think should be adopted elsewhere.

You are invited to post your ideas in the forums. If you enter your thoughts before 21 May 2005, they may be included in openDemocracy’s virtual My ZeroCarbonCity. The city is looking a little empty at the moment but that could all change – with your help! The map will be updated throughout the debate from 21 April until 10 June 2005.

Send any accompanying pictures and photos of eco-city initiatives to climate@opendemocracy.net (please write “ZCC” in the subject line).

You can read more about zero carbon cities at the British Council website.

This article appears as part of openDemocracy‘s online debate on the politics of climate change. The debate was developed in partnership with the British Council as part of their ZeroCarbonCity initiative – a two year global campaign to raise awareness and stimulate debate around the challenges of climate change.
