At Gord we Laugh

Published:

Jon Bright (London, OK): A lot of chuckling can be heard over at the BBC following reports that Brown wants a new British motto for us all to rally round. They are asking people to suggest their own ("Smile! You're on CCTV" my personal favourite so far). There's been a lot of stuff swirling around about how Gordon wants to shore up a decidedly creaking British identity - flags hung on public buildings, national Britishness days etc. The mix of comments at the beeb highlights the amused cynicism which this sort of stuff is always bound to be greeted with. I doubt that something like 'Britishness' can ever be given a new, thick meaning - but even if it can, top down initiatives like this will succeed in uniting us around nothing more than our sense of humour. On second thoughts - maybe that's not such a bad idea?

Something to be proud of
