(Indian) summer of discontent?

Published:

Jon Bright (London, OK): As someone who takes the bus into work, I suffer only the knock on effects of the 2,300 person RMT strike which has shut down most of London's tube network: buses are (much) fuller than usual of people looking (much) more pissed off than usual.

RMT are the latest union to hit Brown's government with a major strike after the Prison Officers Association walked out last week (a strike which, luckily for him, he got through without any major incident for the papers to latch on to). Brown decided to squeeze public sector pay when he was still playing second fiddle to the previous PM (what was he called again?) - now he's going to be solely responsible for dealing with the fallout. The beeb has a useful list of which services we might be doing without when here.

If unions get serious about coordinated strike action the chancellor who presided over huge increases in public spending might ironically find public sector pay developing into his biggest headache as PM. At least the weather is nice enough to walk at the moment...
