Anthony Barnett (London, OK): As 10 Downing Street announces a special Friday cabinet meeting to discuss the constitution and distributing power to the citizen (watch this space) an entirely modern constitutional question arises for which - hold onto the banisters - there is no precedent. Can Her Majesty's Foreign Secretary have a blog and if so can he conduct his meetings with other dignitaries in Second Life?
David Miliband's blog has been suspended it says, for the time being. And in his final entry as Minister of the Environment he writes, "It may take some time for new service to be resumed, but please watch this space". Leaving it open as to which space, Ministerial or personal, we should be watching. On 20 June he wrote that he had taken on the shape of a new Avatar to support the cause of carbon neutrality in Second Life admitting, "I am not a regular visitor... I think I should visit more often". What will he do there as Foreign Secretary? After meeting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, David told us, "He looked in great shape". He had better be careful saying that about Condi Rice or even her Avatar, he might cause a virtual diplomatic incident.
