Anthony Barnett (The Atlantic, OK): Thanks to the wonders of WordPress's time stamp system, this post should appear as I am over the Atlantic, heading for New York and then Washington where I will be speaking at a CSIS conference on Overcoming Extremism along with my colleague Kanishk Tharoor who edits oD's Terrorism and Democracy section - and writes its brilliant security briefing. I am looking forward to New York, of course, and also to reporting back on how British politics seems from there. I have a feeling that it is Sarkozy and Merkle who are making the waves, but we will see as the EU summit looms what the North Americans make of the new Treaty, which for the time being, until we get our own, will provide the nearest thing we have in Britain to a written constitution...
