Writing for openDemocracy’s Humans of COVID-19 project
We want to give a platform to people struggling because of the pandemic. Maybe because of money worries, maybe because of family problems, discrimination or legal trouble. You can tell your story in writing, on video or in audio - however you feel most comfortable doing it.
We won’t publish your name or identity if you don’t want us to. However, if you do, you will get your own openDemocracy biography page, with the information you give us.
How to send us your story
If it’s text, please try to keep article length to 800 words. You should send it to us via the submission form.
If it’s video or audio, please record no more than 10 minutes.
You can use one of the following services to send your videos to us. Please confirm in your message or the video description that you own the copyright or otherwise send details of the copyright that allow us to republish it.

Please tell us if your story has been published elsewhere, either on the web or in print, providing links if possible.
Don’t forget that our audience is global. So if you refer to something local to you or your culture, please give a simple explanation for a wider audience.
Please supply us with any links that provide context or explanation for your piece.
Please let us know your name and give us a way of contacting you. If you want to remain anonymous, please let us know - we still need to know who you are, but will not publish your name or anything that can identify you.
Unless you want to be anonymous, please supply a biography with any links you feel are appropriate and, if possible, a .jpg image of yourself.
openDemocracy cannot respond individually to all unsolicited submissions: if we intend to publish your article, we aim to respond within three weeks.
Copyright & syndication
With almost all the material published on openDemocracy, copyright remains with the author.
To assure our writers gain as much exposure as possible around the world, openDemocracy has adopted a Creative Commons licence for much of its content.
openDemocracy assumes the right to syndicate your writing around the world for one year after publication. Any revenue generated is shared equally between openDemocracy and the author.
We further assume the right to include your work in other republication agreements, such those with academic institutions, and in our printed journal publications.
Data protection
openDemocracy never gives out email addresses or other contact details of any of the authors we publish.
Our policy when approached for author contact is to forward the request to the author.
