Andrew Byerley

Andrew Byerley is trained in human geography and economic history. He works as a researcher both at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala and at the Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University. His current research investigates the interface between spatial forms and social norms in contexts including migrant labour compounds in Namibia and public parks in Sweden. He teaches courses in urban and regional planning and colonialism.

Friction zones and emergent publics in Stockholm parklife

Finding ways to deal with friction zones in public spaces such as parks is highly pertinent for both urban democracy and urban sustainability. Some friction is central to genuine democracy, whereas too little or too much is not.
