JayfromTexas explains the difficulty of amending the American Constitution - and why it means that no one will open the debate on legalized guns:
I know that you guys are bewildered by the American insistence on legalized guns. I have to agree with you. I would also like to say that the majority of Americans would like to see assault rifles, and assault handguns (think Glock pistols, if you know what they are.) not be available to the general public. But the effort to do that is a Herculean task that not even the most popular politician wants to touch. Here is the reason: The right to bear arms is listed in the Bill of Rights. It is embedded in the beating heart of the American Constitution, and that document is the most sacred thing in American society. You can call your God any name you want here, you can protest whatever cause you like, you can take your own government to court, and whatever else you desire, but you must worship the US Constitution. It has only 26 amendments in 230 years, but making an amendment to it would be nothing compared to the struggle of removing an article in the Bill of Rights. To attempt to do so would be to open a two front war, and you would be massacred from the Left and the Right. The ACLU and the NRA would join forces and rain unholy fucking hell down on you. (Sorry, American Civil Liberties Union and the National Rifle Association.)
