Women and the World Social Forum

The 7th edition of the World Social Forum 2007 will take place in Nairobi from the 20th to the 25th of January. representatives from organisations, social movements, networks and coalitions will gather and debate how to make "another world possible".

Patricia Daniel will be blogging live from the event for openDemocracy on our Women and the World Social Forum blog. In doing so she will try to answer this question: is another world possible without a women's perspective? It is possible  and desirable to reconciliate the anti-globalisation struggle with the women's movement, but with assemblies such as the WSF "being hijacked by (male-dominated) left-wing groups from Europe or the US who exclude women and young people from the debate", how can women's voices be heard? And how can their opinions concerning their own battles be taken into account more efficiently?

The need to publicly adress women's political and social issues (in Africa and elsewhere) is undeniable. Let's hope that an important transnational platform such as the WSF will come up with solid propositions which will see the light of day very soon.
