Angola Day?

Published:

In case you didn't already know, the Swamp lists what's happening in Washington on any given day and today I stumbled on the following:

(9 May) 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. ANGOLA — The Woodrow Wilson Center, Angolan Embassy, USAID, others, hold a conference to mark Angola Day. Location: Wilson Center, Reagan Trade Building."

First of all I was perplexed since Angolan national day is on the 11th of November (I think) so went to the Angolan embassy's website to find that:

The main goal of the event, known as ANGOLA DAY, is to promote the image of the Republic of Angola in the U.S."

The 'other' participants included Chevron - surprise, surprise - who happen to own one of the large off-shore mining projects in Cabinda. [ MORE TAG ] Cabinda is a province which generates 60% of Angola's oil-wealth, is severed from Angola-main by the Congo Republic and has only about 10% (or less even) of Angola's population. I think Chevron's machinations on 'Angola Day' might have a lot to do with the continuing secessionist struggle in Cabinda, but its only a hunch!

[updated] And here we have it, in a rather subtle public relations tone, entirely void of any ideal, consistent and earth shattering content, but nevertheless, a 'hunchable' proof:

Angolan Industry minister, Joaquim David, Wednesday in Washington invited US businesspeople to seize the opportunities and advantages that Angola offers to foreign investors, to cooperate in the construction of a prosperous and democratic society."
