Grandfather and grandmother in their tenement apartment Jacques Aslanian, 1995
Born in Paris, where his parents fled to escape the genocide, many of Jacques Aslanians paintings reflect his preoccupation with his ethnic heritage and the themes of loss and exile. The grandparents in this work are, in his words, Eternal immigrants, waiting in their high-rise tenement, bare feet on the oriental carpet: the only thing that links them to the land.
