Prince Charles and his wife plus two of our ex-Prime Ministers take the salute at Sunday's Falklands parade to mark the 25th anniversary of Britain's victory in the south Atlantic. It reaches out to the history woven by trooping the colour (see below) but is closer to farce than empire. The absence of the Queen makes the point. It reminded me of another picture: soon after victory in 1982 Margaret Thatcher flew down to the Falklands and wearing exactly the kind of headscarf Elizabeth had trademarked for country occasions, pinned medals on some of the troops. Her Majesty was said to be beside herself! It rankles still.
