The Year Ahead

Published:

Jon Bright (London, OK): If you've been reading us since the year began you might of noticed we ran a "Year Ahead" series - asking some of our regular contributors to look at what's going to be importance for power, democracy and governance in the UK in 2008. You can read the series in full here. There are ten posts from Ireland and the EU to accountability and the economy.

2008 could well be a historic year for citizenship, rights, democracy and the UK as a whole - and there is a huge amount coming up. The looming transformational governance agenda is beginning to make itself felt, with ID cards getting nearer. The counter-terrorism bill, due in a matter of weeks, will decide if we are to press ahead with powers to detain people for up to 42 days without charge - despite the fact that it looks as if some intercept evidence will now be permitted in court. Will 2008 be the year when people become seriously concerned about the impact of the database state and government authoritarianism? I could go on, but take a look and a taste for yourself if you have a moment. And if you want to send us your 'Year Ahead' please do so.
