Accountability in global governance: Anwar Ibrahim interviewed

Published:

Anwar Ibrahim is former finance minister and deputy prime minister of Malaysia. A dispute in 1999 with prime minister Mahathir bin Mohammed led to Anwar's arrest on charges of sodomy and corruption. The sodomy conviction was later reversed in 2004 and upon his release he travelled abroad.

Now he's back in Malaysia picking up the threads of his political life. He has also become a key campaigner against corruption and for accountability in government and in business.

openDemocracy's Editor Isabel Hilton met up with him this week at the offices of London-based organisation AccountAbility of which Anwar is the honorary president.

Being against corruption, of course, is like being in favour of apple pie. But given the choices made by governments in the OECD countries in recent years, is the big problem now how to make that position effective?
