Two flags or one (or three)?

Anthony Barnett (London, OK): Has anyone observed yet that the story of Gordon Brown instructing that the Union Jack now fly from Downing Street every day of the year in the name of Britishness coincides and contrasts with a similar breakthrough by his fellow cross-channel newcomer Nicholas Sarkozy? In the latter's case the tradition used to be that the nation's post offices and town halls were sent an official picture of the new president with the tricolore. Only now Sarkozy has added the flag of EU as well. How long before both flags fly from Downing Street?
