Personalisation is where websites show you specific content dependent on data they have about you.
Like showing you information about floral dresses because they think you’re a woman, or more articles about Bernie Sanders because you’re viewing from the US.

This technique is increasingly common across the web. We believe that web users should be able to see how this works, so we’re designing transparent personalisation tools with the yourData project.
If we do it well, we hope people will demand the same everywhere online. See how yourData works.

Media organisations should lead on ethical web design. Help us do it.
To affect the flow of data and power, media organisations need to design the digital landscapes that we depend on.
We at openDemocracy are well placed to coordinate, test and share better ways to live with the web, but we need you to be involved.
We require support from our networks and from anyone else who cares.
