Warning to Reformists

26 May 2005

Dr. Kazem Alamdari, activist and professor, warns reformists to be careful. Dr. Alamdari argues if Khamenei's reaction was due to fear of a popular revolt then reformists should stand tall and push the offensive line further and let the right wing retreat even more to the point where they drop the undemocratic process of selecting candidates.

But if Khamenei's reaction was orchestrated and preplanned with the Guardian Council's moves, then the reformists should watch out for a bigger trap that may await them in a near future. He says it may be better to resist following the leader's orders and let the "forced qualification" fall on its face.

How is the British police crackdown bill a threat to democracy?

The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill creates new stop-and-search powers, allows the police to put more conditions on protests, and threatens Gypsy and Traveller rights to roam.

It's been met with mass protests from Bristol to Belfast. Is this bill a threat to our human rights – and is there any stopping it now?
