Anthony Barnett (London, OK): The Home Secretary was on the radio saying even more detention without charge was "reasonable" in case it would be needed. The OK team is off to a seminar today so more on this later. But the idea that we must pass legislation to give the police powers now that they do not need in case they do need this is beyond reason. There must be a law somewhere which states that "The powers you give the police are always used". That does not quite catch what is at stake, however. Remember three people who the police concluded were not guilty were held without charge for a month.
