Anthony Barnett (London, OK): There's an interesting report in Tory Diary over on ConservativeHome about disagreements north of the border over whether the party should be supporting Labour's proposed constitutional convention. It says,
Once again the key debate between unionists here is whether the United Kingdom is best preserved by sating appetites for full independence by offering semi-independence, or by taking a stand and opposing all additional powers.
Note the phrase "is best preserved". Doesn't that smack of the past tense as in: Can we keep the new gherkins in the old bottle?
