Support for Salmond's independence rises sharply

Published:

Jon Bright (London, OK): Thanks to Alex Buchan for flagging up this poll in the Herald - which shows support for independence up 5% in Scotland in the last 3 months, to 40%, whilst the figure against is down to 44%. The poll asks exactly the same question Salmond wants to put to referendum in 2010. The Herald, and Salmond himself, puts this down to strong performance by the Nationalist government (and it was, I hasten to add, taken before the controversy surrounding Trump's golf course really erupted). At some level any referendum will be a referendum on the current administration (and, by implication, the opposition) - regardless of the question posed. With opinion apparently so finely balanced, therefore, it could be small bits of political news (some worth only £950) that could end up making the difference between independence and union.
