Trump’s victory: time for action

Trump's victory comes in an extraordinary year that many are struggling to comprehend. Whatever it means, we must avoid the easy answers and evasions that got us here. And we must redouble our efforts to debate, connect and organise in the face of resurgent forces of hate and division across the globe.
openDemocracy is ready for this and we need your support.
We launched in May 2001 at the zenith of globalisation, warning there was a problem with the way the world was being governed that would undermine democracy, and promising to be a global arena to confront this challenge.
Through the rocky years that followed and buoyed by the energy of contributors from every corner of the Earth, we now reach millions every year to challenge fundamentalisms in all their forms, and inspire progressive thinking.
The autocrats of this world thrive where conversation is closed, where voices are silenced, where different experiences are ignored. We can only learn to beat them by building the opposite: plural spaces which celebrate depth and diversity.
We have plans for a hugely improved web platform that gives you – the readers – more of a voice so that you can engage in what happens next. Supported by a stronger editorial team and much better networking for readers, we will build a resilient, self-sustaining arena which defends and reinvigorates human rights and democracy.
